Kia is adding these little chrome warts to crossover pillars for some reason.

So glad my old 2009 Accent still has a mechanical one...
But....like...legitimately WHY are they even a thing? Is it because they are less complex and cheaper to manufacture, or?
Like...what if a electronic parking brake fails? If a mechanical one fails, you snip the cable and can be on your way. If an electronic one fails ON, you’re screwed and have to call a tow, right? Is there an emergency way to release them...?
...and like...what if your brakes go out? Mechanical handbrakes can be used in an emergency, but electronic ones can’t...? It’s like removing a safety feature...

I just saw the Steltos in person yesterday. Even more than this new Sorento, it looks like Kia is trying to put a Land Rover vibe on its “tiger nose” grille. I much like the interior of this one compared to the down market Steltos though.

Very true. Automakers have found a way to make cars more profitable for them though electronics that can't be repaired when they fail and require oem replacements.

Well, for one, the car can engage it itself without anybody yanking on a lever. For most people it means their car will never roll away, even if they get out to fight somebody before they put it in park . I’m also guessing some people never bother putting their car in park or anything nowadays. Just shut it off and walk away.
You also avoid leaving it partly engaged and burning up your brakes, not setting it enough and having the car roll away, etc. The possibility of user error is minimized with zero usability impact to 99% of the population.
I think some (most?) cars do have a way to manually disengage the parking brake if it gets stuck engaged (e.g. battery is completely dead and it needs a tow).
The point about using the handbrake in an emergency has long been considered moot since brake systems are considered pretty much infallible nowadays and it’s a difficult maneuver to pull off anyway.

Yes its cheaper since there are less parts. They’re also used for hill hold assist.
I t depends on the manufacturer how it functions. In my Regal the e parking brake will provide stopping force as long as you hold up the switch while moving.
Looks like t he Civic is the same but I’ m not sure if he was holding the switch up or just pulled up once.
The downside is if you lose power it cannot be engaged, or worse, disengaged.

But I use my manual handbrake as a hill hold assist, I don’t need an electric motor for that! :P :/

... I thought I made a dumb post about it once! Well at least my opinion is consistent.
